Paper, Pixels and the Lasting Impression of Books

Merilyn Simonds est l’auteure de 17 livres, dont The Convict Lover. Son œuvre romanesque la plus récente, The Paradise Project, est un recueil de nouvelles imprimées à la main sur une presse du 19e siècle avec des papiers fabriqués en partie à partir de plantes de son jardin. Gutenberg’s Fingerprint: Paper Pixels, and the Lasting Impression of Books, sa publication la plus récente, raconte l’expérience de la production simultanée de The Paradise Project en format numérique et sur une presse ancienne. L'artiste Carole Deveau fera une démonstration de l’impression typographique.

Merilyn Simonds is the internationally published author of 17 books, including the creative nonfiction classic, The Convict Lover. Her most recent fiction is The Paradise Project, a collection of stories hand-printed on a 19th-century press with endpapers made in part from plants in her garden. The experience of producing the collection in both a digital and book-arts edition is the subject of her last work, Gutenberg’s Fingerprint: Paper, Pixels, and the Lasting Impression of Books. Artist Carole Deveau will give a demonstration of letterpress printing.

Stéphanie Nuckle en résidence à Imago du 7 au 21 avril 2017

Atelier portes ouvertes avec l'artiste en résidence Stéphanie Nuckle, vendredi 19 avril, 17h à 19h

Stéphanie Nuckle vit et travaille à Montréal. Elle a obtenu un baccalauréat en arts visuels et médiatiques profil pratique à l’UQAM en 2015. Artiste interdisciplinaire, elle s’intéresse à la performance, le dessin, l’installation et la sérigraphie. Elle s’implique activement dans divers collectifs dont le projet Complot 13ème édition, Local 16 en Montérégie ainsi qu’à une résidence-laboratoire qui aura lieu au centre d’artistes Verticale à Laval en mai prochain. 

Pendant son séjour à Imago, Nuckle souhaite développer une série de sérigraphies sur rouleaux en créant un motif de papier bulle dérivé des colis d'expédition. S’inspirant de certains codes visuels empruntés à la poste internationale, de ses modalités de livraison, ainsi que des notions de dualités contenant-contenu et fragilité-duralibilité, ce papier peint sera une première étape à la réalisation d’une installation immersive et performative.

Stéphanie Nuckle works and lives in Montreal. She received her BFA from UQAM in 2015. Her interests include performance, drawing, installation and screenprinting. She is active in several collectives such as projet Complot 13ème édition, Local 16 in Montérégie and a residency/laboratory that will take place at the artist-run centre Verticale in Laval this May. 

During her residency at Imago, Nuckle will develop a suite of screenprints of bubble paper motifs on rolled paper. Inspired by international postal services’ visual codes and delivery terms, this wallpaper is the first element towards an immersive performative installation exploring notions of duality such as container-content and fragility-durability.

Andrew Patterson en résidence à l’atelier Imago du 12 au 25 mars 2017

Durant sa résidence à l’atelier, Patterson va créer une série de poèmes néo-concrets intitulée FHOLDING PATTERNS. Ces objets textes invitent l’observateur à considérer la langue comme une substance amovible en imaginant l’acte de lire comme forme d’écriture. À travers le touché, l’interprétation, la réflexion, et le jeu, le public sera invité à activer FHOLDING PATTERNS. 

Andrew Patterson est un écrivain/lecteur/auditeur basé à Halifax, N-É. Poète, ils’intéresse par une approche phénoménologique de la langue et sa pratique explore le geste, l’écoute, l’expérience partagée et le lieu culturel du jeu. Son travail touche les arts imprimés, l’installation média mixte, la performance, la poésie didactique et cherche un équilibre entre les expériences sensuelles et sémiotiques de la langue.

During my residency at Atelier Imago, I’ll be creating a series of neo-concrete poems entitled FHOLDING PATTERNS. These text-objects invite the audience to consider language as a moveable bed, to imagine reading as a form of writing; exploring what it means to encounter language in an embodied sense. Of particular concern is how we come to hold a certain meaning, and how this meaning gently folds in light of time and effort pressing. Concluding the residency, the public will be invited to activate FHOLDING PATTERNS through touch, reflex, thought, reading and play. 

Andrew Patterson is a writer/reader/listener based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A poet interested in phenomenological approaches to language, his practice explores gesture, listening, shared experience and the cultural location of play. Andrew's work, which spans printed matter, mixed-media installation, performance and instructional poetry, seeks a balance between the sensual and semiotic experiences of language. By locating the poetic gesture in unlikely forms and cultural spaces, communication becomes less a function of transmission and more a sharing that becomes subject. All with intention to reward and encourage curiosity.
