Leyla Majeri en résidence à Imago du 9 au 19 septembre 2013

Musicienne et artiste en arts visuels, Leyla Majeri réalise de petits films d'animation sans caméra à partir d'impressions sur pellicule. La bande-son du film constitue sa partie sonore, les images imprimées sur cette section de la pellicule peuvent être traduites en sons grâce à une lecture optique du projecteur. Durant sa résidence à Imago, Majeri compte poursuivre dans ce sens et réaliser une série d'impressions sur film à partir de ses dessins afin d'explorer leur dimension sonore.

Majeri joue également de la batterie dans le duo de musique expérimentale « noise » Yomul Yuk et crée des interventions visuelles et sonores en collaboration avec la musicienne montréalaise Katherine Kline. Son travail a été présenté au Canada, aux États-Unis, en Europe et au Japon ainsi que dans le cadre d'événements tels que All Tomorrow's Parties (Angleterre), Ecstatic Festival (Amherst, MA), Transmodern Art (Baltimore, MD), Ende Tymes (Brooklyn, NY), Tone Deaf (Kingston, On), Suoni per il Popolo (Montréal) et MUTEK (Montréal).

Musician and visual artist, Majeri makes short animation films without the use of a camera by screen printing on film. The sound track of the film is literally a part of the film next to the image.  Images screenprinted on the sound track of the film can then be translated into sound tracks to the optical sound reader of a projector. During her time at Imago, Majeri will continue in this direction exploring the sound component of different drawing techniques on film.

Majeri's work has been shown in Canada, the United States, in Europe and Japan and also presented in such events as All Tomorrow's Parties (England), Ecstatic Festival (Amherst, MA), Transmodern Art (Baltimore, MD), Ende Tymes (Brooklyn, NY), Tone Deaf (Kingston, On), Suoni per il Popolo (Montréal) et MUTEK (Montréal). She also the plays the drums in the experimental duo « noise » Yomul Yuk and creates visual and sound interventions with Montreal musician Katherine Kline.

Exposition échange avec Centre3, Hamilton, Ontario

The Road Sign Project is a production of Centre3 for Print and Media Arts in Hamilton, Ontario, presented in partnership with Atelier Imago in Moncton, New Brunswick. The two art centres each invited eight artists to create road signs that incorporate the vernacular and syntax of email and text messaging. In Moncton, the outdoor sign project started in 1994, when Atelier Imago secured advertising space on a bus. The initiative served two goals: to bring awareness of printmaking by presenting art in public space, and to show what was being produced in the studio. Atelier Imago’s mission resonates with Centre3’s goal to engage our community in print and media arts. According to the Ontario Ministry of Transport, road signs function as regulatory, informational, directional, warning, fines and other, sometimes bilingual, guides to provincial highways. The sixteen artists in this project created a selection of markers that mimic the basic format of road signage. Their messages, posted in various downtown Hamilton locations, communicate a range of concerns from contemporary art and politics to the pathos of post-industrial urban existence and romantic relationships. Whether humorous, philosophical or authoritative, the signs may be contemplated, obeyed or ignored at the viewer’s personal discretion.

Marie-France Tremblay en résidence à Imago du 5 au 14 août 2013


Démarche / Bio
J’ai grandi en Abitibi-Témiscamingue et je vis aujourd’hui à Québec. Je suis détentrice d’un baccalauréat en enseignement des arts plastiques. Pendant plus de 5 ans, j’ai soutenu le projet de créer et de publier une image par jour (ou presque) sur mon site marie-dessine

M’inspirant des aléas du quotidien, je puise aux techniques du dessin, de l’estampe, du tricot, de l’impression textile, de la vidéo d’animation et plus encore pour créer des séries d’images ou d’objets.

Je suis membre active de l’atelier Engramme à Québec et je participe à divers projets en collaboration (je suis entre autres membre du collectif Colifichet). Dernièrement, mon travail a été présenté dans différentes expositions et événements au Québec, notamment à l’OEil de Poisson (Québec). En 2013, je présenterai entre autres des expositions individuelles à l’Écart (Rouyn-Noranda), à l’Atelier Presse-Papier (Trois-Rivières) et à la Galerie B-312 (Montréal). Je réaliserai aussi quelques résidences de créations, notamment à l’atelier d’estampe Imago (Moncton).

Projet de résidence 
Pendant les deux semaines de résidence à Imago, j’espère profiter de l’atelier pour réaliser quelques expérimentations et oeuvres en lien avec deux projets amorcés au courant des derniers mois: Mardi d’occasion et Les pyjamas. 

Le projet Mardi d’occasion est un projet de vidéo d’animation et d’estampe en collaboration avec Francis Arguin. Quelques expérimentations de folioscopes (flip books) seront réalisés à l’atelier Imago.

Les pyjamas, s’agit d’une série de dessins réalisés à la manière des imprimés que l’on retrouve sur des chemises de nuit. Tantôt banales, tantôt tragiques, peut-être même choquantes, ces images sont plutôt comme des petits cauchemars répétés pour créer un motif (une scène d’accident, des vandales, des personnages blessés, patibulaires, etc.).

Biography
Marie-France Tremblay holds a Bachelors degree in arts education and lives and works in Québec. For more than 5 years she has upheld a project of an image a day on her blogspot, visit : marie-dessine.blogspot.com. Tremblay works in drawing, printmaking, textile and video using everyday images as inspiration. She is an active member of Engramme, an Artist-run Print Studio and has shown her work in different centres all over Quebec.

Project Description
During her 2 week residency at Imago, Tremblay will continue her work on two projects, Mardi d’occasion, a video and flip book project in collaboration with Francis Arguin and Les pyjamas, a détournement of sorts of printed pyjama motifs.
