BIO(LOGIE)

Un X de maman, un Y de papa et 31 ans plus tard nous sommes ici. La côte est ma compagne constante, si ce n'est qu'en termes anthropomorphiques. Je tire une inspiration infinie dans les formes, les lignes et la palette de mon Nouveau-Brunswick natal. Je travaille principalement la photographie et la sérigraphie. Je suis aussi un enseignant de biologie au secondaire.

Cette série d’estampes est parmi la première que j’ai imprimée en tant que membre à Imago. Avant cela j’imprimais dans mon appartement avec un kit speedball médiocre que j’ai reçu à Noël qui prenait 45 min à exposer un écran dont je devais ensuite rincer dans la douche.

Cette série est à partir de ma collection de photos de plusieurs de mes endroits préférés au Nouveau-Brunswick. La couleur unique évoque l’impression d’un endroit pas nécessairement ce qui est visible.

BIO(LOGY)

An X from mom, a Y from dad and 31 years later here we are. The coast is my constant companion, if only in anthropomorphic terms. I derive infinite inspiration from shapes, lines, and the color palette of my native New Brunswick. I work primarily in photography and printmaking. I am also a high school biology teacher.

These are some of the first images I made at Imago, and certainly the first full series. Before these I was printing out of my apartment with a mediocre speedball starter kit I got for christmas, using a 500 watt construction lamp that took 45 mins to expose my emulsion, and rinsing in the shower.

The images are all from my photography and feature some of my most cherished New Brunswick locations. The single color in each is meant to evoke the feeling of the place, not the necessarily what can be seen.

Cet échange croisé entre Imago et L'Atelier GRAFF de Montréal est rendu possible avec l'appui du Secrétariat aux affaires intergouvernementales canadiennes du gouvernement du Québec.

"Le projet Silhouette de ville / impressions segmentées vise à faire une exploration de l’urbain, du paysage et des impressions in situ. Il consiste à créer une série de petits clichés de profils urbains capturant la dynamique de la ville de Moncton

. C’est au travers de relevés d’élévations de rues et d’habitations et d’une collection d’ornements et d’éléments architecturaux que les clichés seront bâtis. Des motifs seront créés à partir des éléments architecturaux et seront sérigraphiés. Puis, un travail de découpage et de collage donnera la forme équivalant à la contrepartie du bâti, révélant ainsi les silhouettes. Sous forme d’un dialogue plein/vide dans l’image, c’est un témoignage de la cohabitation entre l’appropriation de la ville par ses habitants et mon appréhension de la ville lors de ma résidence de création."

Ilana Pichon est une artiste pluridisciplinaire de la relève de Québec d’origine Suisse détenant une formation en architecture [Maîtrise, 2010] et en arts visuels [Québec, 2013 /Genève, 2000]. Elle est représentée par la Galerie uNo à Québec depuis 2013. Ilana a participé à plusieurs expositions collectives en galerie et in situ à Montréal, Ottawa et Québec depuis 2012.

"The project Silhouette de ville / impressions segmentées (Profile of a City/Sectioned Impressions) wishes to explore the urban landscape and in situ interpretations. This will take place as a series of urban profile clichés which capture the dynamics of the city of Moncton. These clichés will be built on street details and a collection of ornamental and architectural elements. This information, through cutting and pasting, will create motifs that are screen printed. The result will be testimony to the cohabitation between the Monctonians ownership of their city and my notion of it during my residency.'

Originally form Sweden, Ilana Pichon is a pluridisciplinary emerging artist based in Québec city. She holds a Master’s degree in architecture (2010) and in Fine Arts (Québec, 2013 /Geneva, 2000). She is represented by the Galerie uNo in Quebec since 2013. Since 2012, her work has been shown in several in galerie as well as in situ group shows in Montreal, Ottawa and Quebec.

Noelle Wharton-Ayer en résidence à Imago du 2 au 19 mars 2015.

Noelle Wharton-Ayer est originaire de Toronto et réside maintenant à Québec. Elle détient un baccalauréat en art visuel de York University en 2010 et est présentement inscrite dans le programme de maîtrise à l’Université Laval à Québec. 

Le travail de Wharton-Ayer porte sur la consommation d’images du monde naturel et comment les interactions et les rituels de notre quotidien influencent de manière imprévue nos relations avec ces espaces.

Ses intérêts de recherche actuels portent sur l’archive, l’acte de documenter, collectionner et les façons dont une base de données d’images personnelles peut être combinées avec l’information virtuelle fournie par des plateformes en ligne telle que Google Maps et YouTube. Via l’appropriation, la manipulation d’images et de textes trouvés, elle examine les méthodes de mariage entre le digital et l’artisanal en offrant une considération prolongée de l’information accessible instantanément dans notre quotidien.

Noelle Wharton-Ayer artist in residence at Imago from Monday March 2 until March 19 2015

Noelle Wharton-Ayer is a Toronto-born artist currently based in Quebec City. She graduated from York University in 2010 with a bachelors’ degree in visual arts, and is currently a master’s candidate at Université Laval in Québec City. 

Wharton-Ayer’s practice currently focuses on our consumption of images of the natural world, and how interactions and rituals in the everyday unexpectedly influence our relationships with these spaces.

Her current research is also motivated by an interest in the archive, the acts of documenting and collecting, and the ways in which a personal database of imagery can be combined with virtual information provided by popular online platforms such as Google Maps and YouTube. Through the appropriation and manipulation of found images and text, she investigates methods of marrying the digital with the handmade, offering a prolonged consideration of information accessed instantaneously in our daily lives.
